Phonemic awareness is not only a foundational skill, but also the most compelling predictor of success in learning
to read. In this session, participants will be introduced to the Heggerty curriculum, which focuses on phonemic
awareness instruction, including the scope and sequence of developing phonemic awareness skills. Participants
will learn how to implement the curriculum in classrooms from kindergarten through second grade and will have
the opportunity to practice the explicit modeling skills in this session as they would with young students. In
addition, teachers will learn how to use the skills for tier 2 and tier 3 interventions.
